Stormlamp

You keep a lighthouse on a rock in a bad bit of sea. Every night the boats come home to the harbour behind you, and they can only steer round the rocks your beam has shown them. Sweep the light, show them the rocks before they get there, and see them all in by dawn.

It starts gentle. Fishing boats, a calm sea, a few rocks. Then the week gets worse.

• Steamers that turn like cathedrals and need warning early.
• Yachts that are quick and a bit smug about it.
• Tugs towing barges that swing wide on the turns.
• Big swells that roll over the low reefs.
• A lamp that burns oil, runs on clockwork and salts up in the spray, and only you to look after it.
